Privacy Act 2020 (New Zealand)

The Privacy Act 2020 is New Zealand’s primary privacy and data protection legislation governing the collection, use, storage, disclosure, and protection of personal information by public and private sector organisations. The Act establishes Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) that regulate the handling of personal data, provides individuals with privacy rights, introduces mandatory data breach notification requirements, and strengthens accountability obligations for organisations. The Privacy Act 2020 also regulates cross-border transfers of personal information and establishes the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as the supervisory authority.
