Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2024 (Malaysia)

The Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2024 (Malaysia) introduces significant reforms to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709) by strengthening Malaysia’s data protection framework. The amendments enhance accountability obligations for organisations, introduce mandatory data breach notification requirements, recognise the role of data protection officers, strengthen individual rights, and improve mechanisms for cross-border data transfers. The Act modernises Malaysia’s privacy regime and aligns it more closely with international data protection standards, including principles reflected in the EU GDPR.
