Act on the Protection of Personal Information (Japan)-APPI

The Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) is Japan’s primary data protection law governing the handling of personal information by businesses and organisations. The APPI establishes obligations relating to the collection, use, disclosure, security management, and transfer of personal information while providing individuals with rights concerning their data. The law regulates sensitive personal information, cross-border transfers, third-party disclosures, data breach response, and accountability requirements. The APPI has undergone significant amendments to align Japan’s privacy framework with international standards, including the EU GDPR.
